Is that boat going to hit our boat?
3/29/2010
Wake up to waves hitting the side of the boat and we are rocking back and forth. Listen to the Weather Show the cold front is here and the wind and waves are going to becoming right at us 35 knot winds from the west and north west. There are not many areas for protection, we needed to get an early start. Romeo studies the charts and with the wind, waves and bad light, it does not look like we have any choose. We must stay in the Harbour at Cave Cay it is totally protected. Romeo calls them on the radio at 8:00 am and thank goodness they have a spot for us. The Marina is about a mile away, so we head right over before the wind gets worse.
The price is $2.00 per foot and we are 38 feet $76.00 and the power hookup is on a flat rate $20.00 for 30amps or $40.00 for 50 amps not cheap! remember when we paid for what we used on Harbour Island $9.00 for two days. That’s how the stick it to you tell you the meters not working so we will have to charge you a flat rate, rip off! Total price $116.00 for one night, but at least there internet is working so we can catch up.
Couple hours later after tying the boat down with six ropes, Romeo feel good about staying on the dock for the night and staying safe.
This sail boat and its owner and crew just finished circumnavigating the world. Romeo and Ron the owner became fast friend and Ron tried to help Romeo with his SSB radio and get E-mails over it. They were unable to get it going, but Romeo has a better understanding on how it works and will get it going later.
Juliette was in the boat on the internet getting some work done. And this Yacht starts the approach to enter the Marina. The caption of the boat is backing in, stern side towards the dock. Romeo and the dock master go over to help grab the ropes. The wind has picked up to 25 to 30 knots and it is not going to be an easy job getting there boat on the dock. The Capitan is a lady and as she is coming in she cuts it to far and the wind catches the boat and it is headed right for our boat. Juliette jumps up to see if she can help to push off. There Yacht is at least 50 feet long and coming right for us. Romeo and the dock master try to hold on but it is no use she will have to power down and try again. The boat has two engines and she give it almost full power on the portside to get the boat out of the dock slip. Romeo and the dock master through the ropes back and tell them to try again. Next time she backs in and powers down both engines and cuts it in tighter to the dock and nails it perfect. Juliette was very impressed with the lady Capitan and her abilities to get her boat under control in the high winds. Romeo and 3 other guy work to help get the boat tied off and secured to the dock.
Juliette told them how impressed she was with the parking of the yacht in condition and they soon invited her over for a glass of wine. Turns out that she is a professional Capitan, Amy and her friend Debby work together running a bigger 70 foot Yacht full time named Jackpot.
Amy and he brother John own their Yacht. They were on a five week vacation together and having a great time and on there way back to Savannah Georgia.
We meet so many nice people every were we go. They are always ready to teach us something and help with any problems or issues we might have with the boat and help us solve them if they can.
See you guys in Savannah some day! CHEERS!
Swimming Pig?
2/28/2010
This is one of the places that is a must stop in the Bahamas. The island is called Big Majors Spot. It is famous for swimming pigs that come and greet people in there dingy looking for food.
We dingy towards the beach and the pigs swim up to us and all of the sudden one of them try’s to jump in the dingy with us. Romeo is pushing the pig off and the pig jumps on again and a again! He was concerted that the hoofs would punchers the dingy.
The first pig to the dingy gets the first bit. But once on the beach the big male takes over all the eating of scraps that people bring to them.
The two female hurry and swim to each dingy as people approach the island.
Hurry feed me before the big guy comes down here!
The pigs were brought to the the Island years ago as a joke. The pigs have managed to do just fine off the boaters, tourist and locals feeding them.
NO MASS!
I did not want to get stepped on!
Run Juliette get in the dingy before the pigs try to jump in again, lets go!!!
Juliette saw four piglet’s on top off the hill.
Can’t stay long another cold front coming and Romeo wants to go 25 miles to get close to the cut to go to George Town. When we have a good weather window we will to go outside on the eastern shore in the big water of the Exuma Sound, we will head south. Another cold front coming we will have to wait for an opening to travel.
Hurry get my fighting belt it’s a big one!
We pound in to southern waves and wind again all day. Romeo had 28 knot winds at times. We left Big Major Spot around 11:00am. Romeo was not happy with the late start going into areas he had never been. He tried to anchor by Musha Cay in front of the beach, but it has a strong current.
Private Island! Nice yacht!
Romeo turned around and went back, then anchored outside on the west side of Cave Cay with two other sail boats. He anchored by a small beach for the night.
Home made chocolate cookies again! You are going to ruin your dinner!
What’s for dinner? Fried chicken!
Going south to Big Majors Spot!
3/27/2010
Departing Wardrick Wells, we will make water on the way to we save fuel. Romeo goes clean the screen and it is filled with sea grass.
Juliette cleans it for him and he start’s it up and one of the new pumps is not under pressure, that means not water will be made with that pump. Juliette digs out the old pump that Romeo had save in Florida and he takes the new pump off and installs the old one. No luck! Then he take parts off one and puts it on the other, no luck!
Then he takes it all apart and puts the pump back the way it was when he started and it works. He still doesn’t know why, but oh well that’s over for the day.
Juliette has spent the morning trying to get on the internet and could not get on she was not happy with the Wardrick Wells internet service and left with out getting to use one of the cards, they purchase but its time to sail.
Thankfully we were only planning to travel 17.5 mile. We anchor at the south end away from all the crowed at the entrance of Big Majors Spot, by Staniel Cay.
It is a once again gorgeous night and we just stay on the boat and relax after getting off the rough sea and the pounding for three and a half hour. South wind and waves the last two day and we were happy we didn’t have to go very far, but this is a very important stop!
Juliette makes an early dinner a salad and shrimp!
CHEERS!
To Wardrick Wells park head quarter!
3/26/2010
Departing Hawksbill Cay, not going to far today just want to get to head quarters and buy some internet cards and check in with Rusty. It take us about two and half hour to go 10 mile the waves are big and we are pounding into the wind and waves. We get to the Emerald Rock mooring, we don’t pick up a ball we just anchor just south of the balls. Romeo gets the dingy down and we head to the beach to walk to head quarter.
High wind and two to three foot sea the water is rough, but we make it to the beach with no problem.
We walk to head quarts and try to buy the internet card, but now the rule change she tells us we must pay for a mooring ball if we want internet. We pay for two cards and the ball for one night $35.00.
Outside the head quarter there are some small friendly bird that migrate to the area and stop for a snack.
The camp host has bird feeders and a jar of sugar, for park guest to feed them.
They like the sugar as much as Romeo. The sugar creates a little bird frenzy to get the sugar off our hands. The birds are very efficient getting the sugar off you hand and it trickles.
It is so hot Romeo takes his clothes off and goes for a swim, he went nude so he would not have to walk back in wet shorts, Juliette joined him for a quick swim. The water is starting to warm up around 83 degrees, it felt great it was very hot and humid. After the swim Juliette finds another treasure a old white washes picket to make a sign.
Now back to the boat for a sundowner!
